Invisalign: A Virtually Invisible Orthodontic Treatment Option

Although many people think of orthodontic treatment as simply cosmetic, in actuality orthodontic treatment is often necessary to prevent rapid decay, tooth loss, difficulty chewing, and temporomandibular joint disorder. Adults suffering from misaligned teeth can exhibit uncomfortable symptoms such as severe headaches, earaches, clicking in the ears and jaw, or even pain in the neck, shoulders and upper back. For those who require orthodontic treatment to correct these issues, our Plano orthodontics office provides Invisalign treatment.

What is Invisalign?

With traditional orthodontics, teeth are moved into the correct position with rubber bands attached to metal braces that are affixed to the teeth. This means of moving the teeth is very effective, but can be uncomfortable and unattractive. Many adults prefer to avoid traditional braces because of the way they look, feeling it is difficult to maintain a professional appearance while undergoing treatment. For those who feel this way, yet still want to have their alignment corrected, Invisalign is an excellent option.

Rather than using metal braces, the Invisalign approach makes use of a series of plastic trays. Each tray is worn for about two weeks, and moves the teeth a small distance. By the end of the treatment, your teeth will have shifted into the appropriate position. The plastic trays are clear, so they are virtually invisible while you are wearing them. They can also be removed for special occasions, though this should be limited for optimum results in the long term.

Preparing for Invisalign

When you decide to undergo Invisalign treatment, your orthodontist makes molds of your teeth. He then uses digital photographs and digital models to determine what your teeth will look like at the end of your treatment. From these molds and models, your Invisalign trays are manufactured.

It takes a month to six weeks for the results of your treatment to become visible. On average, this means you will use two to four trays before you really begin to see the results. Because the trays are clear and can be removed, you will be able to see exactly what your teeth look like, without metal braces to obscure the view.
