Get Kids to Dentist As New School Year Starts
Many K-12 schools in the Plano area start the new school year next week. If you haven’t done so already, the next few days would be a great time to get your children in for one of their twice-yearly dental checkups.
Why is the time right before the start of school a good time for a dental checkup? It’s simple really: heading back to school is a great reminder to get your children’s teeth looked at. Similar to the public service campaign recommending that you change your home’s smoke detector batteries when we move from Daylight Saving Time to Standard Daylight Time (and vice versa), knowing that the school year starts soon is a great reminder to get your children’s teeth looked after.
In addition, if yours is like many families, your schedule may be packed with your children’s extracurricular activities, not to mention your own commitments – it may be difficult to fit a dental appointment in once school begins.
Making sure that a Plano family dentist checks your child’s teeth twice a year/cleans them professionally means that your dentist can check your son’s or daughter’s teeth and gums for signs of developing cavities, as well as how for well his or her teeth are aligning (your child’s mouth is constantly growing and his/her teeth constantly moving), and check that any emerging adult teeth are coming in correctly.
Many dental checkups detect the beginnings of a cavity – before plaque/bacteria has had a chance to form an actual cavity – and Dr. Dickson take steps to make sure a cavity doesn’t actually form. Tools at his disposal include fluoride treatments that strengthen your child’s tooth enamel, possibly preventing more tooth decay.
Should Dr. Dickson find a cavity, he can fill the cavity with a tooth-colored filling that looks a lot like your child’s real tooth. (The days of gold and silver fillings are on the wane.)
Lastly, should he find that one of your child’s teeth has advanced decay, he can provide porcelain dental crowns that are both durable and stain-resistant. Dental crown technology has advanced such that the crowns look very much like your child’s real teeth – no one will be able to tell the difference.
If it’s been a while since your children have had a check-up, make an appointment with Plano dentist Dr. Darren Dickson before – or after – school starts. Knowing your children’s teeth have been professionally cared for can make the start of their school year less stressful for you – and possibly even your children.
