Dr. Darren Dickson Strives to Deliver Life-Changing Smiles
Ever since his childhood days in Plano, TX, Dr. Darren Dickson has had an appreciation for the ways dentistry can change lives. At an early age, he was fascinated with the smile transformation of his sister, Deanne, an extreme thumb sucker until she received braces. When Dr. Dickson saw the remarkable cosmetic, anatomic, physiologic, and psychological changes that took place after her orthodontic treatment, he knew he wanted to be part of the transformation process in giving others beautiful, healthy smiles as well.
When I was a little kid, my older sister had really, really bad teeth. She was a thumb sucker until she was well into the fifth or sixth grade. Then it was an obvious defect in her smile, in her personality. She was very self-conscious. It affected her friends and the way she acted in school, and things like that. I was a few years younger than her, so I definitely noticed that. I was 6, 7 years old, and she finally got braces. As soon as she got braces, within a couple of years, it really transformed who she was. It transformed how she acted. It transformed how she smiled. She tried out for cheerleader and made cheerleader. Within the span of just a few years, it really revolutionized who she was, how she acted, and what she became. That really made me interested in trying to find out how I could become a part of revolutionizing what someone is and what someone can become.
Along the same lines, the most rewarding part of being a dentist is just the satisfaction of getting to help people. On an elementary basis, just getting somebody who is in pain, and swollen, and might have to go to the hospital, to get them healthy, and happy, and able to go back to work, and able to sleep again. That's bare-bones basics. On a whole other level though, there's the component of somebody who is cosmetically not comfortable with their smile and with themselves. It really affects their self-confidence. It affects the way that they talk, the way that they speak, their ability to communicate and ability to go out and interview, and get a job.
The most rewarding part of cosmetic dentistry is just being able to transform someone's life and give them a chance to access opportunities that they otherwise wouldn't have had the ability to get into.
As his appreciation evolved into fascination with how oral and overall health connect, Dr. Dickson decided to pursue a career in the field that’s led him to become a well-respected dentist in his hometown of Plano, TX.
Dr. Dickson’s path began at Plano Senior High School and then Texas A&M University, where he earned a liberal arts and biology degree in 1991. From there, he completed his DDS at Baylor College of Dentistry in Dallas and studied dental implantology at the University of Texas Health Science Center.
Throughout his career, he’s earned high praise, elected by the Consumers’ Research Council as one of “America’s Top Dentists,” voted Plano’s “Best Aesthetic Dentist” by the Star Local Media Readers’ Choice awards, and voted “Super Dentist” by Texas Monthly magazine.
